One Of Us Is Lying (Ch.12-14)
Summary
Chapter 12
Bronwyn
At lunchtime, suddenly everyone takes out their phone at the same time and swivel their heads to look at Bronwyn. When her friend shows her a Tumblr post, she read the exact same article as what was shown to her by Detective Mendoza. The four of them are called to the principle's office and all nervously sit there. After a lot of awkwardness and silence, Cooper says there is no need to have this conversation and all of them feel the energy of the room coalesce and walk out.
Later that night Bronwyn and Nate call again and talk for hours past midnight. Bronwyn starts to explain her theory on Cooper and Addy masterminding the whole thing together, and also guesses Mr.Avery did it. None of those theories seem to be true and nothing more is figured out that night.
Chapter 13
Cooper
It turns out that her Grandma has revived from her heart attack and is doing fine. He told her everything about the fuss at school to his Grandma. Cooper stated an actual fact--"I didn't do what they say, Nonny. I didn't use steroids and I didn't hurt Simon." His grandma accepted his words without a single doubt. Her grandma suddenly talks about his girlfriend Keely. "If she is not who you love, she's just not. And that's fine"
At that moment Cooper had felt like her grandma seemed to understand everything he was thinking and had felt as if she could see right through his heart.
The chapter ends confusingly and Cooper narrates that, people would be right if Cooper was accused of Simon's deaths. However, there is more to the story.
Nate
When Nate comes home from a party, his father is looking for his phone that can't be found, which is because Nate gave it to Bronwyn. Later that night, Nate and Bronwyn are calling again and watching a horror movie, they flirt with each other and joke that they should watch the movie together but they decided not to and they both went to sleep.
Chapter 14
Addy
Addy had always looked up to her sister Ashton's married relationship with Charlie until Ashton broke it to her that she saw Charlie with another girl. Having revealed a secret to Addy, Ashton now asks for one in return; she wants to know why Addy lied about being in the nurse's office on the day of Simon's death. Tears prick Addy's eyes as she spills her all her half-truths from the past years.
The day Simon died, Addy had gone to get Tylenol for Jake from the nurse's office and was afraid that her sister would call her a "doormat" for doing that.
After the two sisters went on a ride on rental bikes Addy gets a text from Cooper asking if she will go to the big party tonight. Cooper tries to persuade her but Addy decides to sit this one out appreciating him. Addy feels surprisingly grateful for not having to go to another one of Jake's friends' parties and be subject to his controlling nature.
Bronwyn
As Bronwyn takes a run to recede all the chaos in her for the past week, then goes hang out with her sister Maeve. Maeve is accessing the admin panel for Simon's original About That app. She finds a few things suspicious and odd such as discovering that there is an earlier file bearing Cooper's name, but it is encrypted. Also, she has traced Simon's username on the site to an account on the popular forum 4chan.
On the way home, they went to go pick up a new phone Nate has left another burner phone for Bronwyn in a mailbox at a random address so they can secretly communicate.
Cooper
Cooper arrives at the big party that Addy had decided not to come to, by himself. When he arrives at the party, he goes to talk to Jack (Addy's ex-boyfriend) who had gotten totally drunk. Jack immediately begins to excoriate Cooper for defending Addy--his "whore ex-girlfriend" to "anybody who'll listen".
The host of the party, Oliva comes over and asks Cooper if he has seen the Sunday newsletter that was published earlier that afternoon; there's an article written on Simon including Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and cooper all named as "persons of interest".
Thoughts
I had never imagined that Bronwyn and Nate's relationship would be adapting to something more than just friendship. Cooper also defends Bronwyn and it seems like the four people who witnessed Simon's death have a strangely strong bond. The investigation and accusing of the four characters do not seem to stop, but as a reader, I feel like I am gradually coming to support these people.
The characters of this book are in no form relatable but I feel somehow attached to them and find myself supporting them as the story goes on. I am hoping that the four characters are not murderers and I am nervously reading and making myself toward the end keeping my hopes high.
