One Of Us Is Lying (Ch.15-16)
Summary
Chapter 15
Nate
By the time Nate gets to school, reporters with camera crews are on school property and as close as they can get. Bronwyn and Nate meet up at school and plan on secretly evacuating this chaos and somehow escape from winding up on the news for the whole city to see. They drive out of the school from the back parking lot and go to the mall, where everyone is staring daggers knowing who Nate and Bronwyn are. They sit down to talk and Bronwyn starts to be worried about Nate not having a lawyer. It starts an argue and Nate angrily heads his way out of the mall when Bronwyn kisses him and tells him she's sorry.
Addy
Bronwyn and Nate had managed to dodge the cameras but Cooper and Addy weren't as lucky, being on the five o'clock news. Addy uses the girl's bathroom during class and finds out that Janae is crying in the last stall of the bathroom. Janae was Simon's closest friend always going after him and probably was the most shocked and out of words for his death.
Addy is invited by Bronwyn to eat lunch with her at the cafeteria with a few other friends. After school, on her bike ride home, she passed by a hairdresser. Her voluminous hair had always been a trait every single person complimented about, especially Jack (her ex-boyfriend). However, she asked for it to be all shaved.
Chapter 16
Bronwyn
The four students had made their television debut on the countries news channel that the whole family has gathered to watch. As the show started, Bronwyn looks back on the horrid two weeks of being questioned and scrutinized, whispered about, and judged. The narrator of the show exposes the illness of Bronwyn's sister to her family and the mistakes she has done. A guest speaker on the show pointed out if there is no evidence that the four students were a criminal "why isn't anyone looking at other suspects when plenty of people envied Simon?".
Cooper
Cooper finally breaks the news to Keely about breaking up. It ends up in ways they both did not expect and part ways after a huge fight. He knows that he is wrong and owes Keely a better apology than what he just said. It seems like his grandma had been right from the beginning.
Thoughts
When I first started reading the book, I thought that this was a novel based on a murder that became just a little bit of a fuss in the school. I did not even think that this would be news across the nation and these four characters would be famous but not in a pleasant way. I also thought that Bronwyn was a ludicrous character oblivious to her surroundings and superficial. However, it turns out that there was a lot more to her story and she had always been under pressure from all sorts of people trying to impress them all and meet people's expectations. I feel like I learned a lesson from Bronwyn's characteristic traits to not judge people until perceiving the truth and their backgrounds.
