One Of Us Is Lying (Ch.25-27)
Chapter 25
Bronwyn
Bronwyn stares daggers at the television in absolute shock, not able to process what is happening. There is no described of why Nate had been arrested. On the screen is just Bronwyn's boyfriend being harshly pushed by police officers flanking him to open the police car door. Maeve questions what the police have found to be able to arrest Nate after all the hate and press they have gotten for the past week. While numerous emotions arise in Bronwyn, the only idea she has is to call Eli, a famous investigator who she has talked to in the past about this case. Unfortunately, he was not much help but they've decided to meet up tomorrow. For the time being, Bronwyn decides to go meet up with Nate's mother, but Maeve tries to stop her for all the risks she is taking.
When the sisters return home, their sparkling lot is jam-packed and swarming with reporters shoving microphones into their faces. Bronwyn gets inside and talks out everything to her mother, remembering the last time she kept secrets to her turned out into this disaster, but her mother thinking Bronwyn is being too cavalier does not change. They finish talking and Bronwyn's phone rings, on the other end is Nate's mother.
Cooper
Baseball scholarship offers were coming back and things were getting a little closer to normal for Cooper. As he finishes playing a game, reporters are outside and asking him what he feels about hearing Nate's arrest. This was the first time he had heard the news and was in absolute shock. Luis comments to Nate he is finally "off the hook" and says how he had always assumed Nate was the criminal. A few weeks ago, Nate would've totally agreed but after being saved by Nate in the cafeteria he couldn't think the same. As Cooper talks to Bronwyn on the phone, he feels a tingling relief inside of him but worries for Nate.
Chapter 26
Bronwyn
Sunday morning, Bronwyn, her mother, Nate's mother(Mrs.Macauley), and investigator Eli meet up to talk about Nate's arrest. Mrs.Macauley informs them on what shes been told—the school received a call from an anonymous person saying Nate had drugs in his locker. The police got involved and his locker was checked out, and there were no drugs—but it contained Simon's water bottle, EpiPens and a bag of missing EpiPens from the nurse's office. Bronwyn knows that he would never be ludicrous enough to leave them in his own locker. Mrs.Macauley goes on and says that she has been told Nate may be moved to regular prison since juvenile hall won't do "justice". The rest is discussed without Bronwyn even though she has a lot more information that needs to be heard by Eli.
Addy
Addy is surprised to see no vans or reporters shoving microphones in her face and has a rather peaceful morning when there is a knock on the door. It was TJ returning a mistaken textbook, and asked Addy if she wanted to study together. Addy was not ready to take that step just yet and said she had things to do. After he leaves, she receives a call from Bronwyn inviting her over as her voice trembles on the other side of the phone call. Addy rushes her way there, and Cooper is on his way as well. They decide to read through articles of About That looking for articles that are suspicious. They skim through the app and suddenly COoper stops and carefully reads an article that "didn't happen". Bronwyn mentions that it is a weird little aside she found odd a few months ago.
The last two lines are written in first-person point of view as if they are the criminal. A cold wave washes over Addy as she realizes, what was written on the post was an event that she had told no one but Jake.
Chapter 27
Bronwyn
On Tuesday night, Bronwyn is working on the case and after she found out the crucial information, she texted Mrs.Macauly and texted back thank you, but also to ask Bronwyn to stay away from the case. She spent the whole night fantasizing the bombshell they had gotten to get Nate out of jail, but nothing was done about it. Bronwyn, Maeve, and Addy jot down everything they know onto sticky notes when Cooper arrived with new information. He had tracked down the red car that had been in an accident happening right outside the classroom they were in right before Simon died. As they analyze all the information they have, none of it makes sense and the weirdest part is why these four students got involved.
Bronwyn finds out the name of the owner of the car and goes to find him at his school. She rolled down her car windows and that guy recognized her from television and came to say hi. The two were talking and Bronwyn confessed why she was here at someone else's school. The guy hesitates to talk but eventually tells her that he was paid to stage a car crash in the parking lot. Bronwyn pulls up a picture of Jake asking if it was him who had paid him; Sam gravely replies and says he was paid by Simon Kelleher.
Thoughts
I am still in disbelief and don't plan on believing that Nate committed the crime. I still think that there is some sort of mistake behind all of this and hope for the best. As I get towards the end of the book, I feel as if someone is creeping up behind my back even though this is not a scary novel. The odd and mysterious vibe given throughout the entire book has given me a few goosebumps and felt in a way I've never experienced from a novel. At the end of chapter 26 when Addy felt a cold wave wash over, I felt it too and was very stiff a little terrified.
The moment most of the characters and probably most of the readers thought that Jack was the criminal, the whole story was flipped around by what Sam had told Bronwyn. I was very confused and automatically different theories and analysis had popped up into my head which made me figure out how much I was sucked into this novel. I hadn't thought I would enjoy this book merely as much but it turns out I can unequivocally say I am obsessed with it, or at least cannot stop reading!
