One Of Us Is Lying (Ch.28-29)
Chapter 28
Cooper
Cooper and the rest of the "murder club" including Maeve, Ashton, and Kris gather up in a cafe to discuss matters once again. As they look at all the post-its, Eli walks into the cafe door. Everyone looks at Bronwyn in shock, she had organized this meeting under Eli's office so there is a chance we could coincidentally meet and talk to Eli(Lawyer of Nate). Eli tells the kids to mind their own business but the kids' investment does not seem to stop. They return to discussing again when Kris suddenly speaks up. Kris comes to the conclusion that it would be impossible for anyone not in the room to kill Simon and lands his fingers on a post-it note that indicates Simon. At that moment, everyone gasps and realizes the biggest possibility is that Simon committed suicide.
Bronwyn slowly puts her thoughts into words and states, Simon was obsessed with being the huge "splash at school" collecting people's attention. Bronwyn exhales a small gasp, "I'm the omniscient narrator", that is what Simon said right before he drained his drink in one gulp... They all start to follow along when Kris speaks up again—since we know Jake has written or help written one of the posts on About That, Jake must've been Simon's accomplice.
Addy protests that Jake wouldn't have tried to hurt any of the four people of the "murder club" and could not take it anymore, so the meeting ended there for that night.
Nate
Nate narrates on life inside of the jail and how boring it is, and also how slow the days pass by. He reflects on if maybe "she's better off forgetting you exist", talking about Bronwyn.
Chapter 29
Addy
Addy is overwhelmed by how everyone is blaming Jack and attacking him behind his back. A part of her wishes all of this is a coincidence and tries to believe he hasn't done anything bad. As Addy tries to process everything, a memory surfaces from the morning of Simon's death that hadn't crossed her mind till that moment. She remembers Jack holding her backpack for her with an easy grin when he never had done that before. And a phone that wasn't Addy's got pulled out from that very backpack a few hours later.
Addy decides to go talk to Janae who has not gone to school for the past week. Addy planned on checking on her, asking a few light questions, and maybe bringing up the topic of Nate at the end. She does none of that and hugs her as Janae bursts into tears in Addy's arms. They go and sit down and Addy says "Simon did this to himself, didn't he?". Janae chokes out "How did you know?"
Until that moment, Addy had not really believed if all of this was true but know she was convinced. Addy told Janae everything, and Janae silently went upstairs to get something. She thuds down the staircase holding a piece of paper and handing it to Addy saying "Simon's manifesto, it was supposed to be sent to the police a year from now after all your lives are screwed."
The manifesto written by Simon, describing how terrible his life was and wanted to get out—but not go quietly. He devised and plan to make sure his death would be talked about for years after, being unique and creative that imposters that try to imitate would fail, since his death wish was beyond the average "depressed loser". Addy did not understand any of it and was trembling at this point. Janae explains how depressed Simon had been for the past year, so whenever something bad happened, he blew it way out of proportion. The four people he had got involved were people he especially hated. One day, Simon was explaining his extraordinary plans to destroy homecoming, and Jake had accidentally overheard him. At that moment, he brought Jake in to keep things going after he died, since Janae wouldn't do it.
Addy was about to faint due to the overload of information. All this time, Jake had comforted him, drove to a party with TJ like nothing happened, waiting to punish her. Simon had left his admin page wide open for the police, wrote the blogs to post to Tumblr for Jack to post after his death. Janae had been threatened not to tell anyone by Jack, otherwise, she would be in trouble. In the end, Janae had dumped everything on Nate.
Addy was confused, why is Janae telling all of this to her now, even after being threatened by Jake. "You were nice to me. Hundreds of people in that stupid school and nobody, except you." Janae starts crying harder. Cooper's blog had been changed by Jack because he did not want anyone to know his best friend was gay.
Janae's doorbell rings and Jake comes in. Addy hides are records their conversation but her phone rings, and Jake realizes Addy is in the house. Seconds after, Jake is chasing after Addy in the woods and tremendously hurting Addy until Cooper comes to rescue her.
Thoughts
Characters who were strangers and almost hated each other now are bringing boyfriends and siblings to their meetings involving a lot more people than the start. I think their relationships have all improved changing each person better and feel the passion of all of them which is good. After the meeting, Cooper kisses Kris in public and apologizes for being so secretive and not affectionate. The two are ready to embrace their relationship and live an authentic life which made me incredibly proud. Bronwyn desperately wants to talk to Nate and is almost angry he won't give him any calls. Nate is offered so many chances to call but think he's better off letting Bronwyn forget about him. The two characters' wishes and thoughts are colliding and I'm reading the novel really wanting the two to have a conversation. This made me reflect on real-life on how you may be mad at someone, but they might be making these choices for the sake of yourself and it taught me that the only way to fix this is to talk with one another.
It is absurd how evil people can become once they know how much profit they will earn for doing it. I think it so disappointing the humans want so much attention which causes them to do crazy things, even painfully hurt a person they once loved. I was terrified how badly Jake wants to hurt Addy and now that they're not together, he feels entitled to determining her fate, even if it means to almost murder her.
