The Corporation (Oct. 19th)
In today's class, we began to watch a documentary called 'The Corporation". This long documentary consisted of various "professional" people of both argumentative side, speaking their point of view. Occassionally, in documentaries I struggle to comprehend who is saying what and what their exact standing point is, but the extreme biases and opinions were (extraordinarily) easy to identify. Through watching the first section of the documentary, we witnessed the science of exploitation and reality behind corporations. Some shocking facts I discovered was how extreme corporations are about devouring as much profit and productivity, the unpleasant reality behind the stock market, and the substantial power share holders hold over corporations. Undoubtedly, no corporations can neglect making money, because the profit the make is the incentive that makes capitalism work. So, trying to make money is not an issue, but with today's lesson it was well understood that the bottom line of any company is always the profit. For so long, (even before the industrial revolution and civil war) corporations have served people good and was considered a subordinate of the society, serving public trust. Therefore (continuing on from when we watched The Meatrix), I feel like the impact of the choices consumers make are crucial. The trust corporations have constructed over the years is probably very difficult to break down or even criticize. Notwithstanding, I think we all know a few companies that produce good services and values that genuinely make the world a better place. Nonetheless, when given the example of share holders denying companies from being environmentally friendly or raising employees' tax triggered me.
The ideology of a corporation being a legal human was one of the most intriguing concepts we touched on today. Mr.Paterson explained that corporations are legally people. They have the rights and capability to buy houses, cars, land, and other things humans are able to do. However, when corporations does something unconstitutional, or makes a mistake, or intentionally violate people's fundamental rights, they do not go to prison like people do. Meaning, corporations obtain the rewards and benefits of being a legal person but can get away with the negatives and do not necessarily have to deal with punishments (although people in the company can be taken to court instead). This is a significant issue in world society. However, up until this class I had never even thought about the difference between corporations and businesses, and the systematic problems they are causing. I learned that once the company is on the stock market and a small fraction of it is controlled by share holders, this business becomes a corporation. The unjust ruling power share holders acquire regardless of their small contribution to the whole company projects how untruthful matters can get when large amounts of money is involved. Furthermore, when I first heard that decisions could be reversed by share holders, it was so cruel and wicked. Nevertheless, thinking from an opposite point of view, share holders wanting money is inneglectable, so in order for this issue to get closer to a decent solution, more people need to be educated then talking about it.
On a slight tangent, one of the professionals being interviewed was a professor i have heard of, Noam Chomsky. Someone. my group sent an email to, to hear his opinion of the 2021 Afghanistan Offensive. Knowing names of reliable and trust-worthy professors seems to be beneficial, so we can differentiate reliable information from the outlandish ones.
